September 2: Morning Pages

This morning I was woken up by my doorbell. No one ever rings my doorbell, so I was very annoyed and planning to ignore it until I got a text from my Amazon delivery driver saying that he wanted to leave my package somewhere safe. I buzzed the driver in and a few minutes later made it out of bed to gather my package from the lobby.

(Also, please note that this order does not negate my hate for Amazon, despite what you may think. Every few months I gather enough things in my cart to qualify for free shipping, which I justify because there are just some things that are easier to get online.) Today the exciting part of my delivery was a copy of The Artist’s Way Workbook, which has been heavily recommended to me as a tool for sparking creativity.

Once I was sufficiently awake, I sat down with a cup of coffee and began to read the introduction. The book starts by heavily stresses the importance of morning pages, as well as the difference between creativity and intellect, which I appreciate.

I’ll dive further into the workbook later in the week, but this morning my writing was pretty straightforward. First, I emailed my writing group to let them know that I did not meet my deadline to send them pages (they do keep me accountable, despite this recent miss on my part) and then got to work on fleshing out the section I was hoping to send to them.

Revising a novel is hard, and definitely not the most fun part of the writing process, but it’s necessary so I set a timer and worked on one specific scene for thirty minutes. It was hard and I’m not even sure I made much progress, but I did it.
