September 1: Starting a Habit

One of my promises to myself this year was that I would be dedicated to my writing, both in daily commitments and by taking time out of my busy schedule to focus solely on writing. I’ve done a lot of the latter – I’ve attended a few writing retreats since graduating from the Novel Incubator (see future posts about Wordsmith Workshops and Pink Pangea), and I’ve also spent some solo time away to focus on particular deadlines.

But outside of those intense trips, I still haven’t been quite as dedicated as I really should be. So, as I return home from a retreat in Switzerland, where I not only wrote every day, but fleshed out a new book idea (!), I’ve decided that it makes sense to sit down and write every day in September.

I’m planning to document my writing process here, both to keep me accountable and to remind my future self that it can be done! So, without further ado, today’s entry:

This morning I made myself some coffee (I recently bought a new bag at George Howell that’s delicious) and then sat down to write. I started by typing up the chapter of a new book I wrote in my notebook last week, and that’s when I had the idea to document my process here.

Unfortunately, that’s also when I got super distracted. I logged into WordPress and realized I needed to make some updates to my website, both technical (I don’t really know what PHP updates are, but I made them) and content (to showcase my “new” job that I started in November).

An hour later, a new cup of coffee in hand and a load of laundry in the washer, I sat down again. That’s when I got on Twitter.

THEN I finally decided to just remove all distractions, break out my book of writing prompts, and write by hand. A few pages in, I’m feeling much better. It’s not a lot, but the momentum means something.

So, to everyone reading this (probably just me, right?): see you tomorrow!
