NaNoWriMo: The Uphill Battle

NaNoWriMo, if you’ve never heard of it, is this insane thing some writers do. It stands for National Novel Writing Month, and every year thousands of people accept the challenge of writing 50,000 words in the month of November.

I am one of those people.

My road to this year’s NaNoWriMo has been interesting. I’m still coming off the high of my ever so successful summer (in which I wrote an entire 60,000 word sci-fi novel – there will be a post about that soon). However, While I basically worked two jobs this summer, this semester is somehow busier. Not only am I working 15+ hours a week, I’m interning for 10 and taking 13 hours of classes. That’s a full-time job right there, folks. Add ridiculous homework assignments and officer positions in two clubs on top of that, and you’d think I wouldn’t volunteer to do more work.

For some reason I did. Here’s how I’m holding up. As you can probably tell, i’m a little bit behind. nanocountMy current word count is

12178, and today I’m supposed to be at 18333. Okay, so I’m more than a little behind. I started off strong, but then I missed a day, and playing catch up is much harder than it seems. I definitely didn’t have time to write 3000 words a day – and then I missed another day (or two?) and look where I ended up.

November is just chock full of fun assignments and due dates for me (not to mention football games every weekend, which I love), so it’s admittedly not the best time to be trying to fit in a novel. The problem for me isn’t writing, it’s writing that much. However, even if I don’t make it, I will know that I did what I could and it was still impressive.

On that note, I’m going to try my hardest to get this done. I love the story, I just need to find the time to write it.
