Appreciating “Normal” Life

I’ve been so excited about leaving for my trip that I almost forgot to enjoy life – the life I’m living now and that I’ll be coming back to soon. I had planned for this post to be about waiting, and how difficult it is when things are so aggravatingly normal. But this weekend changed my outlook a little.

One of my best friends, whom I haven’t seen since January (and May before that) came and visited me. And we had an amazing weekend packed with normal things that were only amazing because we were together.

We waited two hours for the best barbecue ever, went to a movie at midnight, and spent a day at the lake. We took road trips, made s’mores, and stayed up until three in the morning just talking. It made me remember to enjoy everything, to matter how mundane it may seem.

Life is about living. It doesn’t matter what you’re doing, or the fact that some of it may be boring or routine or tiring. What matters is the people you meet, the experiences you have, and the memories you make.

Tomorrow I’ll be starting the five week journey that I feel like the rest of my life has been leading up to, and I couldn’t be happier. But I also know to make those five weeks count because they’re just that – five weeks.

Of course, I’ll be writing about my experiences here (at least three times a week, though I’m sure I’ll end up posting more), but I’ll also be doing a post a week for Millennium Tours.

  1. I’m so excited for your upcoming journey! Can’t wait to hear all about it. I especially agree with this part: “Life is about living. It doesn’t matter what you’re doing, or the fact that some of it may be boring or routine or tiring. What matters is the people you meet, the experiences you have, and the memories you make.” It truly is all about perspective and the way your expectations collide with reality.
